01In short

What is academic proofreading and editing?

Academic proofreading and editing from TaskDoners is a line-by-line check of your own writing by one of our editors. Proofreading corrects spelling, grammar and punctuation, while editing also improves clarity, flow, structure and referencing consistency. Your ideas and argument stay your own, and tracked changes show you every edit so you can learn from them.

02Questions answered

Proofreading and Editing, explained

What does an academic proofreader check?

A proofreader checks spelling, grammar, punctuation and word choice, plus consistency in capitalisation, numbers, headings and referencing style. An editor goes further, flagging unclear sentences, weak links between paragraphs and structural problems, usually as comments so you decide what to change. Neither should rewrite your arguments.

Who can proofread my dissertation?

Check your university's proofreading policy first, because many limit what a third party may change. Within those rules, TaskDoners editors proofread dissertations using tracked changes and comments, so every edit stays visible and your argument remains your own. Our dissertation proofreading service also checks formatting and references.

How can I proofread my own work?

Take a break first, then read your work slowly, ideally aloud or in a different format such as a printout. Check one thing at a time: spelling, then grammar, then referencing. Keep a list of the mistakes you usually make and search for each one specifically.

  • Read the last sentence first and work backwards, so your brain cannot fill in the gaps.
  • Check every in-text citation against your reference list.
  • Use your word processor's spell checker, but never rely on it alone.

What should I send with my document?

Send the document in Word, your deadline, the level of help you want, either proofreading only or a fuller edit, your referencing style and your university's proofreading policy if it has one. If English is your second language, say so, as it helps the editor focus on what matters most.

Everything you send is confidential, as set out in our guarantees. For feedback on the content itself, the essay marking service comments against your marking criteria.
