How do I structure a university assignment?
Start with the brief, not a blank page. List every task and its weighting, then give each one its own section. Most assignments open with a short introduction, answer each part in the order the brief sets, and finish with a conclusion that links back to the question.
- Underline the command words, such as analyse, evaluate or compare, because they decide how deep each section must go.
- Share out the word count by the marks available, so heavily weighted parts get the most space.
- Use the headings your brief asks for, and check whether a reference list or appendices are required.
